1. Do I need a permit to have an outside fire? You need a permit to have an outside fire unless there is snow cover.
2. When may I burn? With a permit, you may burn only between 5PM and 9AM unless it is actively raining. Permits are issued at the discretion of the Fire Department and may be revoked due to changes in the weather or for any reason that would make burning unsafe.
3. Do I have to be there while I am burning? Yes. All outside fires must be attended at all times.
4. What may I burn? You may only burn brush 5” in diameter or less and “clean” construction and demolition debris. “Clean” construction and demolition debris is defined as untreated wood and does not include items such as any wood that has been painted, stained, or pressure treated, plywood, shingles, furniture of any type or any other item not considered brush or untreated wood. Burning of any other material is strictly prohibited and can subject the person responsible for the burning to regulatory actions.
5. Who do I contact if I have any questions? You may contact the Henniker Fire Department at 428-7552 or the State of New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands.
Open burning is a responsibility, not a right. Following the rules is paramount for protection of yourself, your neighbors, and our environment.
