OPEN SPACE SUBCOMMITTEE

Meets 1st Monday of every month at 7 pm at the Grange

On June 21, 2006 the Conservation Commission voted unanimously to approve the formation of a new Open Space Subcommittee that will focus on land preservation efforts.

The purpose of the Open Space Committee will be to educate the townspeople of Henniker of the importance of land conservation and to assist the Town of Henniker to acquire and protect land from development to help preserve its rural character, protect its waters, provide areas for sustainable recreational use, and maintain natural habitat critical to wildlife preservation.

Activities will include:

  • Serving as an educational resource for Henniker townspeople and town officials in matters of land conservation and open space preservation.

  • Evaluating undeveloped land and ranking according to natural resource criteria including: overall size, wildlife habitat, watershed protection, recreational potential, and proximity to other protected land. 

  • Evaluating town-owned land for conservation potential and suggesting methods for protection.

  • Establishing contacts with landowners to discuss conservation options for their properties.

  • Serving as a liaison between landowners interested in conservation and land specialists from local, regional and statewide land conservation organizations such as the Society for the Protection of NH Forests, NH Audubon Society, 5 Rivers Conservation Trust, The Nature Conservancy, Piscataquog Watershed Association, New England Forestry Foundation, Northeast Wilderness Trust, etc.

  • Working with the NH Fish and Game Department, NH Department of Resources & Economic Development, Central NH Regional Planning Commission, environmental groups and neighboring towns to connect and protect regional wildlife and recreational corridors.

  • Researching and procuring funding and grants available for conservation.

  • Presenting conservation proposals to the full Conservation Commission for approval.
